The Opportunity

We are currently looking for a full-time Aquatic/Fisheries Scientist to join us and assist with our fisheries and water-resource focused projects. Our ideal candidate has excellent writing and analytical skills and the ability to work as team-player. We are particularly interested in candidates with 2+ years of professional experience in one or more of the following: conducting fisheries monitoring and evaluation activities, conducting fish passage and survival studies, evaluating potential effects of hydroelectric projects on fish and other aquatic species, evaluating performance of hatchery programs, performing water quality analyses, or managing complex environmental datasets. The successful candidate will come to work at our headquarters in downtown Wenatchee and periodically travel to field locations in the Pacific Northwest. We will also consider applicants in the Portland/Columbia River Gorge area.

Summary of Duties

Four Peaks Aquatic/Fisheries Scientists perform a wide range of tasks to support environmental studies related to fishery and water resource issues in the Pacific Northwest. The following list breaks out the anticipated duties and the percentage of time dedicated to each category.

Report Writing and Data Analysis (50%) – Compose written narratives for reports and other client correspondence. Prepare and conduct quantitative and statistical analyses for reports. Generate high quality figures, tables, and other graphics to characterize study results.

Data Management (20%) – Perform desktop data entry and data queries. Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on data entry and operational processes. Conduct routine data transfers and uploads from sampling equipment to data storage devices or databases.

Support Field Studies (30%) – Assist with project planning, logistics, and implementation (for example, site reconnaissance or procurement and installation of field equipment). Conduct work safely and effectively in a field setting that may involve inclement weather and/or use of watercraft. Travel to field locations in the Pacific Northwest is required.

Required Qualifications

High level of motivation and willingness to take on a wide range of tasks
A bachelor’s degree (minimum) in a science or engineering discipline is required. A graduate degree focusing on fisheries, aquatic resource science, water resources, or related discipline is preferred
Demonstrated proficiency writing technical reports and other scientific documents
Demonstrated ability to convey study results through effective written analyses and summaries
Proficiency collecting data, conducting statistical analyses or modeling, and presenting data visually
Strong communication and problem-solving skills
2 years of professional experience in fisheries, aquatic resource science, water resource engineering, or a related discipline

Desired Experience (one or more of the following)

Evaluating hatchery programs and conducting related monitoring and evaluation activities
Evaluating the effects of hydroelectric projects on fish and other aquatic species
Performing water quality analyses
Conducting fish passage and survival studies focusing on juvenile or adult salmonids
Managing complex environmental datasets
Developing code or performing analyses using Python, Java, JavaScript, SAS, R, or MATLAB
Experience tracking fish with acoustic or radio telemetry technology
Managing one or more concurrent projects with a multidisciplinary team
